We could be set for the face-to-face meeting that the entire wrestling world has been waiting for, as Seth Rollins has been officially announced as appearing on WWE Backstage this week.
There has been no word yet whether CM Punk will be appearing, but you would have to imagine that since he missed last week’s show due to other commitments, he should be there.
War of Words
The two superstars have been locked in a war of words ever since Punk made his shocking return to WWE programming a few weeks ago, with Rollins obviously looking for a WrestleMania match against the former WWE Champion.
Rollins upped the ante a few weeks ago when he appeared on a radio show to talk about Punk. He said: “Here’s someone who’s been in the doldrums for the last few years because he got his butt kicked in the Octagon so bad he didn’t want to show his face anywhere, now he shows back up on a WWE show. It’s called WWE Backstage show.
“You can say it’s an FS1 show all you want, which it is, and you may be paid by FOX, but that show doesn’t exist without our company, the company that you left five years ago.”
Punk was immediately asked by Renee Young whether there was any truth in the rumours that he was set for an in-ring return, but the Straight Edge Superstar’s answer was as curious as the question itself as he refused to give a straight answer.
That didn’t stop him poking fun at Rollins for the remainder of the show, however. He told Renee that Rollins should stop tweeting at him, before calling him an idiot during the Promo School skit.
Punk continued: “This isn’t the show where you come on and shoot your little angles. Seth needs to stop tweeting and realise that sometimes it’s better to be viewed as the fool and shut your mouth [than] you open your mouth and remove all doubt.”
Response From Other Superstars
The potential match between the two, which would easily take on the main event slot, has got other superstars talking. Part-time superstar and Mayor of Knox County Kane had his say when TMZ corned him. He said: “Man, I don’t know. It would be a good match, though, wouldn’t it?”
NXT Champion Adam Cole also spoke highly about Punk, before admitting that he would love to see him back in the WWE. Cole said: “He was a guy I looked up to and studied, and someone I enjoyed watching. It was so cool to be there and see him on Backstage, and I had no idea that was going to happen.”
However, one person that was reportedly angry with Rollins acknowledging Punk’s return was Vince McMahon. According to Dave Meltzer, the chairman was ‘furious’ with Rollins following to ‘Town Hall Meeting’ on Raw a few weeks ago.
Time will tell whether we see the match between the two superstars, but it does feel closer if they both appear on WWE Backstage this week.
