WWE Superstars, Primo and Epico Colon, are having a hard time elevating World Wrestling Council (WWC). The Colons had this past weekend, WWC Lockout, a show that featured the three Colon members. This also included the former WWE Intercontinental and United States champion, Carlito. For some time now, the Colons have been heading the operation of their father’s promotion. They moved the office of the promotion to a centric location and changed the image of the logo.
At the start of the fall, it seemed that the metamorph of WWC to the modern era was finally happening. WWC repeated with great success their Aniversario show, with Septiembre Negro (Black September). The company made Epico Colon (Orlando Colon in Puerto Rico) the Universal champion. While Carlito and Epico were floating around the title picture. What brought more intrigue to the company was the return of 2x Universal Champion, Mecha Wolf 450. The latter is currently considered the best wrestler in Puerto Rico. Moreover, 4x AAA Mega Champion and great Puerto Rican talent, El Mesias, was also booked for Saturday.
The struggle that WWC faced on Saturday were various. But, the main ones are the following:
- Once again, the WWC has made everything about The Colons. Ignoring the creation of new stars.
- WWC has remained unattractive to young stars outside the company. Their main rival company, World Wrestling League, has shown to be more willing to implement modern wrestling styles and quality in the ring.
- Daddy Yankee has sold three huge weeks of concerts. The majority of the island prefers the concert over some wrestling company that hasn’t aged well.
When Saturday night came around, WWC’s hit or miss was apparent. Fans in attendance only saw one good match out of the whole card. Keep in mind that this is a card that included solid wrestlers like Mecha Wolf, Carlito, Epico and Mesias. WWC’s constant struggle was well shown, with Eddie Colon (Primo in WWE) failing to draw any significant heat as a heel. Moreover, his brother and more verse in the microphone, Carlito, had a spectacular performance (as a face) with the mic.
Lack of excitement keeps being a problem for Carlos Colon’s company. Not even the younger Colons have been able to fix the issue. When Primo and Epico decided to invest in new stars, they drew attention to Mighty Ursus and BJ, both in WWL. The former is a 300-pound masked wrestler who can barely move in the ring and lacks an imposing figure. WWC has awarded him with the WWC Universal championship numerous times in the past. Last time that he held the historic title, the company’s attendance plummeted. BJ, on the other hand, has been on fire with the rival WWL. He was able to maintain WWL as the best company in the island as their main champion and his mic skill are unmatched. The Colons new about his success and offered him to abandon WWL for the “rising” WWC. Ultimately, BJ stayed and WWC lost on him. Other than the Ursus acquisition, the other stars that WWC brought on board were on the side of boringness. Wrestlers that lacked quality, image and drawing power for the company. Moreover, their only young promise, Bellito, lost his Puerto Rican title to the uninspiring Mighty Ursus.
Finally, the attendance for WWC was approx. 400 fans. Although not bad at all, the place that they chose had the capacity for 5,500 fans. WWL made almost 1,000 fans this fall with less firepower and in a smaller arena. The Colon seemed to be in a constant battle between elevating WWC and also keeping the Colon name. The two have shown to not work together. Although Epico as Champion is not a bad choice, it still brings the “stereotype” that WWC is the Colon world and no other wrestler will reign.
Carlos Colon has already confirmed that the pair is still with WWE under contract, even though they haven’t appeared since February. That could change in the upcoming future. The prized WWC library is already in WWE’s power. Moreover, the Colons have lost any big grip that they had left in Puerto Rico. One could see how for WWE the former WWE Tag Team Champions have no value for them. It seems that for the Colons to have a successful post-WWE run, new star other than them must be developed.
