WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship: Bayley (c) vs. Lacey Evans
We’ve been on the road to this one for a while. Though to be honest, I was really starting to think that we were gonna end up seeing it take place at WrestleMania instead. But no, here tonight at the Royal Rumble, Lacey Evans finally challenges for the WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship. This comes after months of battling with Bayley and her close friend Sasha Banks, who have made quite clear their intent to dominate the SmackDown women’s division.
So far so good on that front, as honestly no one’s really come all that close to threatening the reign of Bayley until now. The likes of Nikki Cross and especially Dana Brooke were dealt with quite handily, if we’re being frank. But Lacey is clearly being built as much more of a threat to the gold than we’ve seen from anyone else. Mostly her feud has actually been with Sasha Banks funnily enough, which could tell us something about where the Mania direction will actually end up being…
But for tonight, it’s pure one on one. This rivalry, as many have in WWE over the past few months, has largely been centered around Lacey Evans’ family. She, well… has one, and Bayley and Sasha find that all too exploitable. Also she’s a former Marine and they like mocking this as well. It’s really not the most inventive thing when you get right down to it, but Lacey over the past couple of weeks has shown an impressive bit of emotion in her promos.
I do have to think Lacey will be women’s champion at some point… but I’m just not sure about tonight. It feels like something they’d be more inclined to do at WrestleMania. I’ll say Bayley retains, but this probably isn’t over.
