Tessa Blanchard, despite the recent scandals and controversy surrounding her, has made history for women in wrestling. In the main event of Impact: Hard To Kill, she was able to beat Sami Callihan and become the first woman to ever win the Impact World Heavyweight Championship. She beat former champion Brian Cage to earn her shot at the championship, and would renew hostilities with an old rival. Sami Callihan had won both their previous matches, but third time was the charm for Tessa Blanchard.
What Is Next For Tessa Blanchard?
While the story of her breaking through the glass ceiling and chasing the Impact World Heavyweight Championship was great, many feel that she will be a better chaser than champion. So often in wrestling you will see someone give everything to win a top prize, but then be underwhelming as champion. It has happened with people like Rey Mysterio in the past, and could just as easily happen to Tessa Blanchard as well.
Another potential issue is that she is almost been booked too strongly on her way to the championship in an effort to make her a legitimate contender. She pinned Brian Cage without issue, and now did the same to Sami Callihan. That is the two top men in the company beat without issue. They will need to build someone even more dominant up to beat her for the championship, or make her more vulnerable as champion than she was as the challenger. We will likely see Sami Callihan demand a rematch, which can give them time to build up her first fresh challenger.
Will Other Knockouts Take A Shot At Tessa?
Another question is that will she defend the title against only the men of Impact Wrestling, or will a member of the Knockouts Division rise up to take a shot at the championship. Having two of their talented women on the roster face off for their biggest prize would be a great moment for the company who has always been a step ahead of WWE with how they treat their womens division.
