After multiple years of either defending or challenging for the WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble, AJ Styles finally simply tried to win the battle royal this year and punch his ticket to Wrestlemania. Unfortunately for him, that decision might have costed him his chance to even compete at Wrestlemania due to an injury suffered during the match.
AJ Styles In The Rumble
AJ Styles would enter the match at number 18, and would seemingly have good odds of victory. Brock Lesnar was already eliminated from the match, and the match started to fill up. While he would have to take on more opponents, he didn’t have to go one-on-one with The Beast. He would only last 7 minutes and 49 seconds in the match, as after taking a spear from the returning Edge, he would land on his arm in an awkward fashion. He would lay on the mat and favor the arm for several minutes. When he would stand up, he would approach Baron Corbin, who only threw a simple punch before moving on. Edge would throw Styles over the top rope, and he would be quickly checked by officials.
Could AJ Miss Wrestlemania?
Plans seemed to indicate that AJ Styles was going to face Randy Orton at Wrestlemania. While it is unlikely they would redo that match at the show so soon, and we could have seen Edge face Styles at the show instead. It is likely that the plan was always for Edge to eliminate AJ Styles from the match, but likely not as soon as they did.
If AJ is healthy for the event, this simply sets the story up for the huge event. Styles could be angry at Edge for returning and injuring him, say he should have stayed retired, and threaten to end his career again at Wrestlemania. It would be an angle which fans would get behind, and could finally get AJ Styles to become a hated heel. His main issue with any run he has had as a heel is that fans inherently like him due to his past accomplishments. Going after a returning Edge could finally do it for him. Plus we could see the dream match every WWE fans stays awake wanting. Edge, Curt Hawkins, & Zack Ryder going head to head with AJ Styles, Karl Anderson, and Luke Gallows. Don’t lie and say you don’t want that to main event Wrestlemania.
We here at The Overtimer wish AJ Styles a speedy recovery, and hope to see him back in time for Wrestlemania.
