History will be made in AEW tomorrow, as they will be airing an Intergender Tag Team match for the first time ever. The closest we have seen to intergender wrestling was Nyla Rose demolishing Micheal Nakazawa after he came to Rihos aid. That changes with the match between longtime friends Kenny Omega and Riho, and recent couple Kip Sabian and Penelope Ford. Reports indicate that they didn’t hold back, and there was action between everyone. The match was taped on the Jeri-Cruise last week.
Is There A Place For Intergender Wrestling In AEW?
With women gaining more and more prominence as wrestling advances, barriers are being broken down. Recently we saw Tessa Blanchard become the first woman to become the top champion of Impact Wrestling, and WWE has positioned Becky Lynch as the face of the company for most of 2019.
AEW has had a rough start to their women’s division, and people aren’t exactly thrilled with that. While Riho gets crowds excited, she hasn’t been a fantastic AEW Women’s Champion, and matches just aren’t meeting the expectations of fans.
They have a supremely talented women’s roster, and this match should showcase that as Riho & Penelope Ford are two fantastic wrestlers who can match skills with the men of AEW. There will be complaints as to Kip Sabian taking offense from Riho, but just remember, people take offense from Marko Stunt, who is pretty much the same size.
Kenny Omega & Riho: Their History
This team is not one that is coming out of nowhere, as they have been connected for a very long time. Kenny Omega was someone who helped train her into the wrestler she is today. They have been teaming up since 2010, and usually rock matching gear during their team ups. Before this AEW match, they most recently teamed to defeat Antonio Honda & Miyu Yamashita in DDT back in November.
Before Double Or Nothing, Riho spoke with Sportskeeda about her bond with Kenny Omega. “I don’t know if you can call it a bond. We tagged together maybe five, maybe eight years ago. I think when he saw me compete, he was fascinated with regards to my potential.”
