AEW World Championship: Chris Jericho (c) vs. Jon Moxley
Last year, on May 25th, at AEW’s debut show Double Or Nothing, Chris Jericho defeated Kenny Omega in the main event. And afterwards he was giving the crowd the business as he loves to do, until Jon Moxley made his shocking first appearance for the company, coming out of the crowd to stand face-to-face with Jericho! Chris was shocked, and then dropped with a Double Arm DDT! Of course Mox followed this up by jumping Omega, who fought back as hard as he could but was also laid out with a Double Arm DDT onto a giant stack of chips!
That made Mox vs. Omega the more urgent match at the time, but you still had to know that Mox and Jericho would be facing off in a match of their own. Turns out, it would take a long time before we got to it. But once Moxley finally got past Omega after a wildly violent Unsanctioned match, he then went after Le Champion. Jericho wanted more than anything to avoid having to defend his title against Moxley, so much so that he offered him a spot in the Inner Circle. His intent was to have Moxley join him rather than face him.
Mox played along for a while but eventually suckered him in and crashed a bottle over his head, before making off with the Ford GT that they offered him. Since then, things have only gotten more intense. Jericho stabbed Moxley’s eye and nearly took it out with a spike. In return, Mox used the keys of the Ford GT to stab Santana’s eye and send a message. This has been a one-man war against the Inner Circle and it’s been quite a thing to see.
For my money, it’s the best build to a world title match I’ve seen in a long, long time. Moxley is an incredibly strong challenger. As great a champ as Chris Jericho has been, here in the peak of his multi-decade career, I really feel like tonight may well be the night. Mox may well be the guy. It feels bold and could totally be wrong but I wanna say Jon Moxley wins the title tonight.
