In the packed week of WWE programming, there is one show which has long gotten the short end of the stick. This is 205 Live, the signature show of the Cruiserweight division. With a roster capable of some of the best matches on the roster, and a dedicated fanbase, you would expect it to be a more successful show. It has a major flaw however, and that is just about all that is holding it back.
205 Live Is Shot After Smackdown Live
While the action on 205 Live can often wake up a tired crowd, they are always fighting an uphill battle. They have to go on and perform after the weekly episode of Smackdown Live. Fans will have already been in the arena for atleast 3 hours, and many leave before this extra show happens. Former Cruiserweight Champion and current RAW Tag Team Champion Buddy Murphy once compared it to “being the local band following AC/DC”.
Glimmers Of Change
There have been glimmers of change for the brand however. At one point, it was taped before Smackdown Live, as the Mixed Match Challenge would air after the event. This meant that while the crowd would start out tired, they would get them fired up for the episode of Smackdown to come. This alone helped the 205 Live brand out, allowing them a better crowd atmosphere when they begun.
On another occasion, 205 Live was done at Full Sail University due to a double taping of Smackdown for a Christmas episode. This allowed the high flyers to perform infront of the typical NXT crowd, with it also being the birthplace of the division with its roots in the Cruiserweight Classic. They would get some great reactions that night, but it was simply a one off event.
Should 205 Live Get A Network Special?
With their insanely talented roster, it might be a great idea to run a PPV like special focusing on the division. While moving them to a better time would help crowds, it wouldn’t help the lack of promotion that the brand faces. Having a major special would put many more eyes on just how good the divison is.
With stars like Cruiserweight Champion Jordan Devlin and Tyler Breeze available, as well as the potential for people like The Undisputed Era to show up, it wouldn’t be hard to build a stacked card.
