Jake Hager vs. Dustin Rhodes
You had to know this would be his debut. That one was never up for debate, really. But the question was, when would it happen? And we’ve had to wait on that for what has honestly been quite a long time for modern wrestling standards. I mean Jake Hager made his presence felt in AEW back on October 2nd, the debut episode of AEW Dynamite. He was the centerpiece in the formation of the Inner Circle, before we even knew what the group’s name was. And even on that night, we were teasing this match here… his big moment saw him slam Dustin Rhodes painfully onto, and through, a ringbell podium.
The next big step came weeks later. During the brewing feud between Cody and Chris Jericho, Hager assaulted his brother Dustin in the parking lot. First using his sneaky low blow, a nod to his last MMA fight, Hager wedged Dustin’s hands in a car door and stomped on it, shattering it. Dustin was wearing a cast on his hand for weeks following this assault.
You knew the match was coming but they were very tight-lipped about when. And of course it didn’t help that Hager has barely said a word since joining AEW. The man is either a statue or a missile, there is no in-between. Neither of these things talk. But finally Dustin was able to goad him into making his in-ring debut, calling him out and officially challenging him weeks ago for this bout here. Hager is far, far removed from the man known as Jack Swagger in WWE. Jake Hager over, for certain. Let’s see what his transformation yields him in the ring.
