No Holds Barred: Matt Hardy vs. Randy Orton
This match comes as a result of one of last week’s more surprising segments. Randy Orton was again failing to address why he attacked Edge, when Matt Hardy came out to try and urge him on. He spoke passionately about the history he shared with Edge, the feud and friendship. Orton would then attack Matt and strike him down with a Conchairto, just as Edge received. And of course, we haven’t seen from Edge ever since that assault.
I think a lot of people, myself included, figured that would be the last we’d ever see of Matt Hardy on WWE television. Even Matt himself might’ve thought as much, tweeting “GOODBYE” afterwards. His contract is known to be coming up within the next month or so and he’s made every indication that he plans on letting it expire. There’s even a lot of talk about how AEW may already have an entry plan for him in the form of the Dark Order’s mystery leader, the Exalted One, something that both sides have had some fun playing with.
It would’ve made a lot of sense if that segment were his write-off, but this did not turn out to be the case. He’s atleast got one more big match to look forward to here tonight, in the form of a No Holds Barred war with Randy Orton. How much offense he’ll actually get is up for debate, of course. Odds seem pretty good that Randy is going to absolutely demolish him in this match and beat him with relative ease before actually writing him off. But it is nice nonetheless that he gets a fairly major match here as a sendoff. Matt’s history with WWE goes back more than two decades after all, he should have the chance to go out with a bang. Orton over.
