You can’t imagine that Dio Maddin’s time in WWE went the way he intended. He was signed from Booker T’s Reality Of Wrestling promotion, and sent to NXT & the WWE Performance Center to hone his craft. He had been in training for just a year before his try-out for WWE, and has been in NXT since 2016. Dio would take a break from wrestling in 2019 however.
This would be to start duties as a commentator, using his otherworldly charisma to great advantage. On September 10, 2019 he would replace Nigel McGuinness on 205 Live, and later that month would get a featured role on the Monday Night RAW announce desk. This wouldn’t last long, as in early November he would be mauled by Brock Lesnar and put down with an F5. He was removed from commentary afterwards and replaced by Samoa Joe.
Dio Maddin Is Back!
At an NXT Live Event in Orlando, Florida, Dio Maddin would return and defeat developmental talent Cal Bloom in short order. Following the match, he would take the microphone and cut a very effective promo. This was simply that after what Brock Lesnar did to him, he would stop at nothing to get a shot at The Beast Incarnate. He will leave a path of bodies in his wake, if that is what it takes to get a chance at revenge.
This character arc for Dio Maddin will be very effective if done correctly. What it lacks from Matt Riddle wanting to fight Brock Lesnar, is that judging from their interaction on RAW, Dio Maddin has at least spoken to Brock Lesnar at some point. WWE recently had a meeting backstage at NXT to curb talent taking shots at RAW & Smackdown talent that hasn’t been approved, so there might be something bigger brewing here.
What Will Dio Do In The Meantime?
The goal of taking the fight to Brock Lesnar is not an easy one, and it will take time. Dio needs to perfect his craft if he doesn’t want things to go the exact same way in their next encounter. It would be foolish to not have him on NXT TV as soon as possible. This will allow him to build his fanbase outside of Twitter & NXT Live Events. One way to fit him onto TV is a tag team with his close friend Mansoor. The NXT tag team division is lacking in teams, and they would be a highly charismatic team to bring the table.
