Another edition of AEW Dark came to us tonight. In the only match between two AEW mainstays, Brandon Cutler took on Colt Cabana. In spite of everything that is currently going down in the world today, this is a very significant episode. Quarantines and shutdowns have hurt everyone for certain and they’ve basically hit every business. And it’s hit independent wrestling particularly hard thanks to the terrible timing. WrestleMania weekend and the weeks surrounding it were meant to mean a series of huge dates for the indy scene. It’s where a lot of promoters and workers alike make the bulk of their money, in something of an annual tradition. But that all had to be cancelled along with nearly everything else, and it’s put many of them in a rough and uncertain spot.
In acknowledgement of this, tonight’s “double” episode of Dark features seven guests whose dates were cancelled. It’s a series of paydays to folks who could seriously use them and a general urge to support one another in these trying times. Personally speaking, I applaud this effort and hope they can continue using Dark this way in the coming weeks, I think it’s very much worth doing. The show has been uploaded by now but you can see it anytime and before I do the results, let’s finish off the previews.
Brandon Cutler vs. Colt Cabana
Here we have our only bout of the night between two AEW regulars, as the rest of the show features a lot of indy guests. Brandon Cutler is still winless in AEW, sitting at 0-11 and it’s getting to him. He’s got a fun underdog gimmick going on right now though as he gets a little closer to victory every time and always breaks out an unexpected sequence of inventive, high action spots, always trying new things to try and get that first win. To me atleast it comes off as a pretty inspiring thing and I think it could be a pretty special moment when he finally gets that first W.
It’s extremely unlikely to happen tonight though. Colt Cabana has come onto the scene with some fire, thwarting the Dark Order on his first night, making a serious fool out of Peter Avalon in his singles debut and now he’s got a budding feud with Kip Sabian to deal with. So he’s probably not dropping this loss out of nowhere to Brandon Cutler. Colt Cabana over.
