I can’t say I’d blame you at all for not realizing this… but the 2020 iteration of WWE Elimination Chamber is on tonight! The pre-show is going on as I type this out! Braun Strowman will be defending the WWE Intercontinental Championship in a handicap match against Sami Zayn and his crew, Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro! My name is Jordan Huie, you are here with us tonight at the Overtimer where we’ll be giving you live coverage of WWE Elimination Chamber! That means recaps and results from the show as they come, plus previews of everything you can expect! As I said, the Kickoff is rolling on as I speak so let’s get a move on!
WWE Intercontinental Championship Handicap: Braun Strowman (c) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura, Cesaro & Sami Zayn
We have been building to this one for a while. Braun Strowman was one of very few people in the last, like, decade honestly, to be in active pursuit of the WWE IC title. Not just challenging for it but actually making the claim that he wanted to be champion and going through hoops to make the match happen. After all, for him, it’s his first real singles title, something he went years without getting. Finally, he took down Shinsuke Nakamura on a certain episode of Friday Night SmackDown.
Everyone expected that match to happen at a PPV at some point and it was supposedly planned to on a couple of occasions, but after a lengthy delay, yeah, just happened on TV one week. Now the feud finally gets itself represented on the main card in a bout that may well blow it off for good. If Braun Strowman wins this match, there’s really no way the heels could possibly come back for more. And certainly Strowman winning this is far from impossible.
But there is the matter of where we go from here. I suppose Braun would defend against Sheamus at Mania which is certainly realistic. But I also found myself asking what Daniel Bryan might be doing and the best guess I had would be finally getting that Bryan/Nakamura match that both men have wanted for years. And the easiest way to set that up would be if Shinsuke won the title back tonight… it’s an interesting one to think about. But I think the safest bet is to say Strowman retains and perhaps tonight Sami finally gets those hands.
