As we speak, another episode of AEW Dark is live on YouTube. Indy guest wrestlers Corey Hollis & Mike Reed take on mainstays Joey Janela & Sonny Kiss. In spite of everything that’s currently going down, this is actually a very significant episode. Quarantines and shutdowns have hurt everyone and every business. It’s hit indy wrestling particularly hard thanks to the terrible timing of it all. WrestleMania weekend and the weeks surrounding it were meant to mean a series of huge dates for independent wrestling. It’s where a lot of promoters and workers alike make the bulk of their money, in something of an annual tradition. But that all had to be cancelled along with nearly everything else, and it’s put many of them in a rough and uncertain spot.
In acknowledgement of this, tonight’s “double” episode of Dark includes more matches than usual which in turn allows AEW to feature seven workers whose dates were cancelled. It’s a series of paydays to folks who might seriously need them and a general urge to support one another in these trying times. Just speaking for me, I applaud this effort and hope they can continue using Dark this way in the coming weeks, I think it’s a very worthy cause. The show is ongoing as we speak (although of course you can watch it whenever) so let’s get to the previews…
Corey Hollis & Mike Reed vs. Joey Janela & Sonny Kiss
Corey Hollis has been wrestling since 2009. Alongside John Skylar he had a few tryout matches in NXT, including a bout against the Revival. He’s had a litany of former tag team partners, including Hangman Page, who he formed the team ‘Country Jacked’ with. Mike Reed is a 16-year veteran of the sport. He’s most commonly found in the Orlando-based promotion I Believe In Wrestling where is a mainstay and 2-time tag team champion.
The two of them are therefore experienced tag wrestlers. But as with all the other guests, they’re pretty clear underdogs in this bout. While Sonny Kiss doesn’t get wins very often he’s only ever beaten by those who are about to get pushed and has taken Jimmy Havoc to the limit in recent weeks. Joey Janela was reportedly intending on becoming a part-timer in AEW as he refocused on his indy work but obviously that might not be possible anymore, so as a side effect we’ll probably be seeing him regularly for a while still. Janela & Kiss to get the win.
