With the threat of Coronavirus looming, no one is wanting to take many risks. Because of this, Fox has suspended production of all shows on FS1, which includes WWE Backstage. The show hosted by Renee Young, Paige & Booker T (and occasionally CM Punk) has been a key way for WWE to break news on their shows.
Despite Being About WWE, This Show Is Run By Fox
While many would rightfully assume that this is the first show in the WWE lineup to be cancelled, that isn’t the case. WWE Backstage, while linked directly to WWE, is produced and run by Fox. This is what gives the level of freedom the hosts find on the show, as well as why CM Punk is involved. This choice has nothing to do with WWE, and does not indicate that they will be stopping production on any of their flagship shows.
How Will This Effect WWE
While WWE Backstage is a very fun show to put on in the background while you do other things in your day, it is very far from essential viewing. You can easily get all the information delivered on the show from social media, and they could get away with just running a WWE Backstage podcast instead. It would give the same personality and information, while keeping the staff low and safe while this situation plays out.
Is WWE Backstage A Failure Of A Show?
Airing late on Tuesday Nights on Fox, the show has hardly been something fans are flocking to every week. They rarely pull in a large amount of viewers, and where the news is shot across the internet so fast, it is far from must see TV. When they get guests like Keith Lee on board for an episode, it could be worth going back to watch those interactions, but even that isn’t enough to save this show.
It is a piece of WWE on Fox, and it won’t be going away permanently anytime soon, if it doesn’t get a better timeslot it is doomed to never really be watched. If this is one of the only pieces of WWE to be shut down during this pandemic, that will be the best case scenario.
