One of the more interesting characters in professional wrestling has been Broken Matt Hardy. With it’s roots in Impact Wrestling, this character has made it’s way through the indies, into Ring Of Honor & WWE, and now landed in AEW. However, this is will be a more vicious form of Broken Matt Hardy, who has been reborn from the ashes of the watered down ‘Woken Matt Hardy’. During his time on the Talk Is Jericho podcast, he explained what will be different.
Matt Hardy Discusses What To Expect Going Forward
So the best way to describe the Broken Matt Hardy character is that he is simply a host for entities of the past. He created this gimmick as he knew that his body couldn’t keep up anymore, and this would make it easy for him to still entertain fans. Hardy has worked hard to get into good shape once again, but knows that he needs to tone down his style. He is now sporting a new look however, which he attributes to a new entity. His new essence, for AEW, is Damascus, signified by the red streak in his hair. Damascus is “an older and more powerful essence” from 999 BC. He describes it as: “A lot more vicious, a lot more serious.”
After his character was turned into a joke, having a more serious take once again should be interesting.
Speaking On Woken Matt Hardy
With him being open to speak on everything now that he is free from the shackles of WWE, he is able to explain what went wrong with his character in WWE. “One of the things that was so beloved ‘Broken’ Matt was that he would wink to the audience, and kind of break the fourth wall, and say jokes that would make the smart fans – the die-hard fanbase – pop. I don’t think Vince totally understood that, I don’t think he got it, and he’d even want to play to those people, as well.”
When he did the “Broken” Matt Hardy laugh along with Bray Wyatt’s laugh, Vince said “This is funny shit!” and had him end his promos with it over and over again every week. Matt Hardy felt like it was “overkill” and had “became a rib.” Because of that, at the end of ‘Free The Delete’, when Damascus becomes Matt’s essence, he made a point to be more serious.
