This week was a very different experience for the black & gold brand of NXT. The default is two hours of strong in ring action, with some of the best in the world. Fans expected this again, just in front of an empty WWE Performance Center. Instead, WWE played it safe in the best way possible. They could have just aired some PPV matches and did some taped promos like RAW & Smackdown, instead they used this block to ensure fans know the full story of Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa, the rise and fall of #DIY.
Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa Had The Best Feud In NXT History
From their first match in the Cruiserweight Classic to their huge brawl last week from the Performance Center, this feud has been brewing for over 3 years. They have swapped roles since it began, with Ciamapa now being the beloved face and Gargano the hated heel, but the animosity have never changed. While they had their brief reunions, they are forever doomed to fight to the bitter end. With NXT now on USA, it has a whole new audience to tell this story too. You can explain bits on commentary, but to get a full picture you need time to tell the story. If there is one thing WWE does better than anyone else in wrestling, it is making the best wrestling documentaries around.
This Rivaled Even WWE 24 Content
Taking nearly the entire runtime of NXT, the full story from start to finish was told from this feud. Between clips from their biggest matches and interviews with the men themselves, this was the best way to experience it without watching 3 years of NXT. It had all the care and attention to detail that is usually reserved for paid content on the WWE Network. It was the best use of time if they weren’t going to have matches on their program, and while they played it much safer than their competition of AEW, they put on a fantastic production.
The only failing they had was that they used this as a surprise, when this should have been promoted heavily to give fans what they should expect.
