With WrestleMania 36 being held under the most unique situation imaginable, it’s difficult for fans to embrace the yearly professional wrestling Super Bowl. The extravaganza is diminished because there won’t be any fans, not real buildup to it, and the fact it’s mostly already taped this week. It’s forced the WWE to become creative and split the event over two nights. The hope from fans is there will be something special that’s going to happen. One superstar may have an answer in part as it’s rumored Bray Wyatt pitched the idea of wrestling John Cena as both his alter egos.
Thinking outside the box
As far as ideas go, this is a really interesting one. During a live event it’d be next to impossible to pull off the costume change. It’d be relegated to either using a double for a period while Wyatt changes or Wyatt just puts on the mask and that’s that.
It’d be possible to pull off, but it would most likely feel weak. But with everything being pre-recorded to avoid any problems with stricter coronavirus quarantine instructions, it’d be relatively easy to pull off through editing.
We saw what could be done on AEW Dynamite where Matt Hardy teleported from spot to spot from the top seats in the arena to eventually to ringside. The fact that this was as badly edited as some of the worst home movies (Maybe they did it purposely as a laugh, like Jericho arguing with a drone?) doesn’t matter. It’s the idea, the conception becoming reality that demonstrates what wrestling shows can do under the circumstances.
Obviously, doing such a trick would be near impossible with a full arena, but with an empty one? Why not?
WWE is better suited for this
Unlike Chris Jericho, who is easily one of the greatest wrestlers in history, John Cena has made a solid living making moves and appearing on television shows. WWE has their own movie studio in house, so it’s realistic that Wyatt and Cena can pull this off seamlessly if given the chance.
Yeah, these are obvious points, but they’re relevant to the situation and give the WWE the best chance to put on a good show.
While performing without an audience has forced wrestlers to perform at their best, it’s also shown his limited they can be. Wyatt’s idea allows Vince McMahon and the WWE to produce television like Eric Bischoff did at WCW. They don’t have to worry about getting it perfect the first time with promos as they can reshoot. Even matches can be redone if it’s reasonable and in the budget.
In short, this gives the WWE the chance to show their wrestlers in a better light than when the crowd’s there. They can even shoot around the crowd, focusing more up close and personal to the ring action so we’re more invested like with a movie.
All of this is possible, because of the outbreak, but also because of creative minded people like Bray Wyatt. There’s a chance this WrestleMania could be something special after all.
