Major League Wrestling has a number of hot talents to keep an eye out for. The company’s approach to wrestling to that of a battleground for different, defined styles. Most promotions don’t put this as a point to watch. It’s generally “We have these stars and this is what’s going on!” Major League Wrestling does that and makes sure you know “This is their style.” It adds a sense of wonder about how the match will turn out and, on another level, can this wrestler’s approach to this style beat this wrestler? Their wrestlers are even addressed as “fighters” because of this.
Here are six heavyweights to watch in Major League Wrestling.
“Filthy” Tom Lawlor
The former MLW World Heavyweight champion makes use of his MMA background with a style that is heavily strike-oriented. Tom Lawlor isn’t afraid to go to the mat but he’s a big fight player and most of Major League Wrestling’s big fights either kick off in a strike battle or devolve in slugfests. His penchant for these kinds of duels makes him a natural threat to—actually, each heavyweight in MLW exists in a state of mutually assured destruction.
Beyond the ring, Lawlor is one of the most charismatic wrestlers on this list and one of the most charismatic in MLW. Originally an ally to the Von Erichs, he’s become a disrespectful, strong heel who excels at garnering cheap heat and running with it. The leader of Team Filthy.
Davey Boy Smith Jr: Major League Wrestling 2019 Opera Cup Winner
This third-generation wrestler came a long way following his run in WWE and his success in New Japan. Davey Boy Smith Jr is a big heavyweight standing 6’6 and weighing around 265lbs, his style is similar to Hammerstone’s only split evenly between technical and power. DBS came into the company during its first version with TJ Wilson but became known in his second run with Teddy Hart and Brian Pillman Jr as the new Hart Foundation.
With Teddy Hart’s legal issues the Hart Foundation is technically inactive as the two remaining members are looking to stake their claim of the World Heavyweight and Middleweight titles as singles competitors. His run in the 2019 Opera Cup has positioned him as a big threat to Jacob Fatu’s gold!
Alexander “Meat Castle” Hammerstone: MLW National Openweight Champion
The current MLW National Openweight champion is someone I’m really high on at the moment. Standing 6’3 and weighing around 250lbs, Alexander Hammerstone is one of the wrestlers in Major League Wrestling with that superstar look. He’s more than the muscle in MLW’s Dynasty heel faction, he’s good in-ring and has a vibe to him that smacks of future MLW World champion. He mixes power with a very sound mat game.
Hammerstone’s a powerful heavyweight and looks like he should be on national television every Monday or Wednesday night. The Meat Castle has been close a few times having a few talks with WWE in the past. Who knows, he could end up there but I feel he’s a perfect fit for Major League Wrestling and could be World champion by the end of the year—that is if he doesn’t run into a certain Hart family member along the way…
“The AirPod God” Richard Holliday: Most Marketable
With MJF now in AEW, Holliday is the now the most charismatic star in Dynasty and one of the best talkers in MLW. His chemistry with MJF and Alexander Hammerstone made Dynasty my favorite faction in the company. Like MJF, this guy is just a naturally despicable talent.
His “lawyer-slash-father” spiel, calling fans consumers, and telling consumers that they’re breathing rarified air are all priceless. Not only that but he makes sure hassle the commentators about his AirPods.
In-ring, Richard Holliday wrestles a style that can mix well with roughly anyone. What works for this style is that he can keep pace with his opponents. WhileWhile former partner/co-Tag Team champion MJF is supposed to return to face our last entry, Holliday and Hammerstone are really holding down Dynasty.
LA Park: The Mercenary of Major League Wrestling
It might be more apt to call LA Park “The Mercenary of Wrestling” as he calls himself. Honestly, he needs little introduction. He was the “Chairman of WCW” and is known for his skeleton-themed gear, dancing, posing, and a short temper resulting in chair shots. That’s LA Park. Despite not speaking English in promos, his MLW promos with subtitles are high level sh** talking and bragging.
He’s always leaned towards brawling in matches but even in his 50s, he will take to the turnbuckle and take out opponents like a large lucha libre missile. LA Park is the most experienced competitor in Major League Wrestling and this along with a willingness to brawl and bleed makes him a dangerous opponent.
This legend is someone I’d love to see as MLW World champion or National Openweight champ. Currently, he’s broken from the rarely featured Promociones Dorado and is a free agent, regularly tagging with his son El Hijo de LA Park.
“The Southern Psycho” Mance Warner: OL’ MANCER
Hailing from Bucksnort, Tennessee, Ol‘ Mancer came out of the Southern indies and made a name for himself in promotions such as CZW and IWA Mid-South. A Heavyweight champion in both promotions, he’s been in death matches, brawls, and street fights but is serviceable in a normal bout. He shines in tag matches when it isn’t a hardcore bout.
This guy is a top three out of Major League Wrestling for me. He rocks it on the mic with high energy, southern fried promos. To use two old indie faves of mine, he’s like Necrobutcher or MASADA but dope on the mic. Right now, he’s involved in a feud with Dynasty and teams up with Savio Vega and Logan Creed. His big match on the horizon is against MJF.
