Last night at Wrestlemania 36, the Royal Rumble winner did exactly what he told us he would do. He defeated Brock Lesnar. This didn’t come in front of a crowd of screaming fans, but rather an empty WWE Performance Center. Fans around the world reacted with pure joy, but you couldn’t hear that in the arena. This is due to crowds not being allowed to gather with COVID-19 locking the globe down. Should WWE have waited to put the WWE Championship on Drew McIntyre?
This Great Moment Fell Flat
While Wrestlemania 36 had some great matches and moments that didn’t need the crowd, someone winning their first World Championship at Wrestlemania is something that does need that extra boost of a rabid crowd. This can also been said about Braun Strowman winning the Universal Championship, but that match didn’t have months of build with fans eagerly awaiting the moment. The only other moment that needed the crowd was Otis & Mandy Rose kissing in the middle of the ring after months of misunderstandings and deception. Drew McIntrye winning the WWE Championship is a huge deal, as anytime Brock Lesnar loses it is a major event. Having that happen without the crowd screaming in joy felt wrong.
Should WWE Have Waited For Summerslam To Put The Championship On Drew McIntrye?
While the global situation is hard to predict at the moment, people are optimistic that sporting events will pick back up come August, just in time for Summerslam. With that event set to be a huge deal after months of no crowd shows, it would have been the perfect time and place to have Drew McIntyre ascend to the role of champion. Fans would have been desperate to see this if Brock had won at Wrestlemania, making the reaction even stronger.
Fans Needed This Feel Good Moment
With everything being very doom and gloom at the moment, it is important for fans to have something to be happy about. That was the reason for Wrestlemania this year. With only a few exceptions, the heroes won at Wrestlemania this year. The biggest hero in WWE is Drew McIntyre, and because of this his victory meant the most to fans. It is what we needed in these trying times, and maybe that makes this a good decision. Do you think WWE should have waited to have Drew McIntyre win the championship, or was now the perfect time?
