AEW are putting out a new championship, the TNT Championship. This will likely act as their midcard prize, something for the people still working their way to the AEW Championship. To crown the first champion, we will see an eight man single elimination tournament, which will begin soon on AEW Dynamite. With eight of the top stars in AEW in the mix, anyone could walk away with the prize. One of the men chosen is Cody Rhodes, the one man in AEW who can’t become AEW Champion. Will he instead bring prestiege to this new championship?
No Chance Of Being AEW Champion
We can see Cody being extra motivated to succeed in this tournament setting, as the TNT Championship is the only singles championship in AEW he is eligible for. This is due to his loss against Chris Jericho at Full Gear, where the losing condition was that Cody could never challenge for the AEW Championship again. Despite this, he remains a consistently top ranked competitor in AEW, and would instantly make this new championship feel like a big deal. He knows a thing or two about elevating titles, having revitalized the Intercontential Championship once in WWE, as well as helping establish the IWGP United States Championship during his time with NJPW.
Tons Of Great Story Matches In This Tournament For Cody Rhodes
With Cody being one of the main faces in AEW, this tournament feels like a trip through some of his greatest hits with how the bracket is set up. In the first round, he will face Shawn Spears, he he previously beat at All Out, after Spears caved the skull of Cody in with a steel chair. In round two, should he beat Spears, we will either see him face Sammy Guevara or Darby Allin. The first match in Dynamite history as between Sammy & Cody, and we’ve seen two clashes with Darby & Cody, with one being a time limit draw.
On the other side of the bracket, Cody has two huge potential opponents as well. First is Dustin Rhodes, Cody’s older brother. Their clash in the early days of AEW is still regarded as the best one on one match for the promotion, so another clash would be excellent. The other big potential opponent is Lance Archer, who Cody has been avoiding since he arrived in the company.
With so much story to tell with Cody, he feels like a sure shot to the finals at the very least, if not the likely winner. However, you never know what will happen in professional wrestling.
