Shawn Spears has done everything he can in AEW to not be overlooked, after years of suffering that fate within WWE. He spent many years in developmental systems like OVW, FCW and NXT before floundering on the WWE main roster. Despite this, he was always shown great talent. Just don’t call him a good hand in the ring, the last person to do that got a chair shot to the head. While he is searching for a tag team partener under the instruction of Tully Blanchard, singles success in reach as he enters the field to name the first ever TNT Champion. Can Shawn Spears prove himself as a champion?
Shawn Spears Can Avenge A Major Loss
In his first PPV singles match for AEW, he would face Cody Rhodes in a grudge match. After being touted as simply a good hand for AEW, he snapped and would deliver a heavy chair shot to Cody in the build to All Out. He would lose the eventual match, but had an impressive showing against an old friend turned bitter enemy. Now in the first round of action for this tournament, we will see Cody vs. Spears II. This would allow Spears to move past one of his of biggest losses in AEW, and perhaps see him gain back his standing as a singles star.
Showing He Belongs In A Major Company
A successful run through this tournament would do something huge for Spears. Ever since his time in NXT when he gained steam, he’s been viewed as a glorified jobber. This perception has continued into AEW, where people see him as just someone who got a job for being friends with Rhodes backstage. His lack of big wins plays into this greatly, and this tournament could give him the chance to kill this image for Spears. No one in wrestling wants to be viewed as a loser, but that is unfortunately how people view Spears. We will see a very motivated man in this tournament, as he will need to be should he want to reach the finals. Cody might be his biggest threat on his side of the bracket, but he can’t sleep on either Darby Allin or Sammy Guevara.
