In WWE, they have more titles than most small companies have wrestlers. One of these titles is the NXT Cruiserweight Championship, which is in flux a the moment. While a pretaped defense of the title from Jordan Devlin against Travis Banks recently aired on NXT UK, the champion is unable to make his way to the United States to defend his championship, as travel bans have him stranded in Ireland. Instead of having him stripped of the title, William Regal has another idea.
A Tournament Will Crown The Interim Champion
Taking a page out of sports like Mixed Martial Arts, we will see a tournament to name a stand in champion for the Cruiserweight Champion. Taking some of the best in the division and putting them in a tournament will assure that we can see some fantastic TV on the road to this. This will also set up an easy huge match by the time Jordan Devlin is back in the united states, as we will see this new championship unified with the existing NXT Cruiserweight Champion, giving us an Undisputed Cruiserweight Champion.
Who To Expect In The Tournament?
The cruiserweight division across NXT & 205 Live has some of the best in the world. There are plenty of men who have earned a chance during the absence of Jordan Devlin, including Tyler Breeze, KUSHIDA, Isiah ‘Swerve’ Scott, Jack Gallagher, Tony Nese, and Oney Lorcan. That alone would be a stacked field, then you remember names like Kyle O’Reilly and Roderick Strong qualify, as well as Mansoor and Shane Thorne. This could be a tournament filled with some of the best wrestlers in WWE, and one that fans should not sleep on.
Jordan Devlin Not Impressed With This
This news quickly hit NXT Cruiserweight Champion Jordan Devlin, who made the following tweet. “First things first, absolutely shocking and disrespectful decision by @WWE management. Secondly, you can crown a fraud champion and give him a little replica of my title, but everyone around the world knows who the REAL NXT Cruiserweight Champion still is.
Does William Regal Have Something Else Planned For The NXT Tag Team Championship?
Another man in a similar situation is Pete Dunne, one half of the NXT Tag Team Champions with Matt Riddle. While Riddle has been around and competing, Dunne is stuck in the UK due to travel restrictions. During his appearance on The Bump, he mentioned that he will make a decision on this within the next week. Are interim championships a good solution for situations where a champion is unable to make it to NXT to defend? Let us know what you think about this in the comment section down below.
