WWE is running Wrestlemania 36 from an empty WWE Performance Center as a two day event. This is done to ensure the shows goes on, despite the threat of COVID-19. However, WWE seems to be looking into options for getting fans involved, and one is an expanded version of the roll of curated tweets across the screen. WWE has tested allowing webcam streams of fans to act as the crowd, through WWE Fan Council.
WWE Tested This Using The Six Man Tag From Monday Night RAW
While this option is unlikely to be used, they have tested it using a recent match from Monday Night RAW, allowing ordinary fans to be seen reacting live to this match. It was an option provided through a survey from WWE, and it had you watch the match with the reactions on screen around the actual match. There was questions such as would we rather see AND hear fans; just see and not hear; would we want this for every match or just some matches, etc. The result was just a very annoying mess, that distracted from the action way worse than a live audience ever has.
This Would Make Wrestlemania Unwatchable
If WWE goes through with this short-sighted plan, it would drastically reduce the quality of Wrestlemania 36. This show is already a tough sell to fans, with matches being changed on the fly and it completely lacking the feeling of Wrestlemania. Add in a chorus of fans surrounding your screen and distracting from the action, and it would be a nightmare. While it is true that fans do enhance an event like Wrestlemania, this is not the way to get them involved with the event.
The Idea Could Work For Network Content
While this idea wouldn’t work with regular fans, if you used this idea to have a group of legends or current superstars reacting to matches, it would make for something people might actually want to see. It would be fairly easy content to throw together, even in this era of social distancing. We have seen this done as part of special broadcasts of WWE Backstage, with Renee Young, Booker T, and Xavier Woods. This saw a surprise cameo from Jon Moxley, who surprised his wife with their dog midway through a match.
