This is one of those topics that fans, especially detractors of Triple H, like to throw around a lot and with some good reason. While there’s no denying Triple H is a great wrestler, the albatross around his neck will always be that he married into the family and his position.
Nepotism is a legitimate thing, and family members or friends always have to work harder to prove they belong in their position. It’s about earning one’s coworkers’ respect and doing the job right. That doesn’t mean the accusations will go away or even decrease even if the individual does a phenomenal job.
The knock will always be they got there because they were family or a friend.
What if he hadn’t married Stephanie?
As what ifs go, this is right up there. Especially given how quickly Vince McMahon is known to fire people seemingly without a backup plan in mind.
He recently fired the company’s presidents for allegedly not agreeing with him wanting to sell the rights to WWE pay-per-views, though the reasons could be any number of things.
He fired Jim Ross in 2013 allegedly for not controlling a drunk Ric Flair.
The list goes on and on, leaving us wondering how does someone avoid the ill-fated “You’re fired!”?
While it’s probably no where as dramatic as Vince has done as his Mr. McMahon character, it’s hard to separate the two after hearing about the way he conducts business behind the scenes (Jim Ross saying he’d yell, “Say the line, you son of a b*tch!” in their headphones during shows comes to mind.)
Revolving door
Everyone’s favorite hated wrestling aficionado, Jim Cornette, recently spoke about this as he answered a fan’s question on his podcast.
It’s no surprise that he said he doesn’t think Triple H would’ve lasted as long as he has in his position simply because no one stays for long in the WWE office.
As Cornette pointed out, longstanding loyals like Pat Patterson left and came back a few times. We just mentioned about Jim Ross being fired in 2013, then he was let go a couple of years ago. Cornette came and went as well.
The only stability in the WWE job-wise seems to be for the McMahon family. That’s an observation that’s highly likely given everything we’ve heard from various people.
Though it doesn’t mean the family always remains.
Cornette mentioned how the WWE would be different if Vince listened to Shane McMahon, who left the company to pursue his own ventures and came back. As a for instance, Cornette pointed out that Shane wanted to buy UFC before Vince even knew what it was.
Shane appears to be like his father as he’s a visionary, but his ideas don’t necessarily align with Vince’s as much as we may think.
However we look at it, it appears that Triple H has stayed at least partially because he’s family.
