Another episode of AEW Dynamite is on tap here this evening and boy is there a lot to talk about for this one. Not least of which, we’ll be seeing Pineapple Pete himself, Sugar Dunkerton (or Suge D) take on the one and only, Le Champion Chris Jericho! You can expect the same coverage of this show as always, which means in-depth results and recaps, plus a preview of everything that’s on tap tonight. Like I said, lot to discuss so let’s get into it!
Pineapple Pete vs. Chris Jericho
It really seems for all the world like that’s just his name now. It’s the name that’s over so why not? Pineapple Pete initially came into AEW several weeks ago as Sugar Dunkerton, aka Suge D. He was seemingly just one of the many indy guest wrestlers that they’ve been having around recently due to ongoing circumstances. And for all I know that’s legitimately all he was at first. Now though, I’m less certain about that… after all, he’s feuding with Chris Jericho of all people right now! A little mini-feud granted, but still.
This came about as a result of Jericho’s stint as a commentator. He just spotted him in the crowd, saw his hair and felt it made his head look like a pineapple and ran with it. He refused to call him anything other than Pineapple Pete and it seems to have stuck. Fortunately it seems he was already working a pretty colorful gimmick, this would’ve been a much harder thing to adapt to if he was supposed to be an MMA fighter or something.
Before that, Suge was just doing a quick and simple job to Kip Sabian on AEW Dark. Later, he faced off with Jericho’s protege Sammy Guevara, seemingly in response to the agitation Jericho seemed to have for his very existence. But it escalated last week when, during Chris’ entrance in the main event, Pete up and slapped him right across the face. They then wasted little time announcing this rather inconceivable match.
Let’s not even pretend here, Pineapple Pete is not about to defeat Chris Jericho ten days before Double or Nothing. Unless they want to create their own “Horowitz Wins!” or 1-2-3 Kid moment, he has no real prayer. But I do have to think he’ll come out of it looking too good to NOT sign, if he isn’t signed already and honestly I kinda have to assume he is. For whatever reason, Jericho’s taken a shine to him. Wouldn’t be doing this otherwise. And that’s a hell of a guy to have in your camp. Le Champion over.
