Tonight’s the night, AEW Double or Nothing 2020 is soon upon us! We’ve got what will no doubt be a candidate for the wildest bout of 2020 going on here tonight, as the Elite take on the Inner Circle in the first-ever Stadium Stampede match! You can expect the same live coverage of the event as always, plus a preview of every match on the card! There’s plenty to talk about so let’s get underway!
The Elite (Kenny Omega, Hangman Page, Matt Hardy and The Young Bucks) vs. The Inner Circle (Chris Jericho, Jake Hager, Sammy Guevara & Proud-N-Powerful)
The Elite and the Inner Circle have basically been feuding since the very beginning of AEW Dynamite, where the Inner Circle first formed on the inaugural episode, and it’s something that’s really defined the promotion in it’s first year. Tonight we will see them square off in a match that was taped yesterday and by all accounts, is set to be an unforgettable one. This really does feel a bit like their version of WrestleMania in that this Stadium Stampede can probably be compared to the cinematic matches, perhaps mixed with the Edge and Orton last man standing match. I kinda figure it’ll have elements of both, considering the street fight we saw a few weeks ago, combined with Matt Hardy being involved in a pre-tape.
Hangman Page and the Young Bucks are making their return to competition here tonight, atleast within the official confines of AEW. The Bucks have had some matches on BTE, including a strangely violent falls count anywhere match pitting the two of them against each other. For Page though it’s the first time we’ve seen him since the initial empty arena show when all this started. They all made their return in a battle that seemed to preview this at the end of this past week’s Dynamite.
Matt Jackson actually hurt his rib on the returning dive, one of the three AEW wrestlers to be injured on that fateful go-home show. But whilst Rey Fenix and Britt Baker were both pulled from Double or Nothing, it appears Matt’s gonna be working. I wouldn’t be surprised if he were a bit limited though, obviously you can work around these things to a degree in matches with so many people in them.
Something that’s interesting about this match is that this is very close to the line-up we were scheduled to have for the Blood and Guts match, the only difference being that Cody was going to be involved instead of Nick Jackson. I’m sure Blood and Guts is still something they’re looking to do whenever the opportunity arises. But it may be months down the line still, so why not have a big match between these two factions in a different way? And since you’ve got that big football field to work with, why not go with it?
That said, with the way they’ve built this match, it really does feel like it’s about time for the Elite to get a big time major victory. It’s the homecoming match for Hangman Page and the Young Bucks. The whole group, including Matt Hardy, finally standing together and fighting as a unit. The numbers evened up after weeks of struggling. And most importantly, vengeance for Vanguard 1! Yes, the time has come… The Elite over.
