Obviously, this could all be put to sleep if Cody loses next week but I think there are still too many possibilities for him to lose too quickly. Let’s have a look at some of the best matches Cody could have if the open challenge continues…
Rusev
Surprisingly, this feels like the most unlikely due to us having no clue where Rusev is going to end up. It was mentioned by JR that he would pick him out of the WWE releases to join AEW. What a way to introduce him to the roster through an open challenge. Although if he did accept, he would have to be the winner to book it right.
Nick Aldis
This would be a great one as it would go back to one of the matches that actually started the idea of AEW. All the way back in the All In PPV where they had a match for the NWA World’s Heavyweight championship. Cody did win this match, although he did lose it later. It would be great to see Nick Aldis in AEW, although he has said the reason he hasn’t joined is because of them having too many top stars. Although if he accepted the open challenge wouldn’t mean he signed with them it would be a great hint to one of the matches that started the company.
Zack Ryder
This one feels like it could happen at any moment. Even though Cody has said that he doesn’t want all of AEW just to be friends. Zack Ryder could still become a part of the open challenge. Even though he should definitely sign with the company. With him never getting the chance he deserves in WWE. Maybe in the future, he could be the fourth member of the rumoured Four Horsemen of AEW.
Jeff Cobb
Jeff Cobb has had a match in AEW before with Jon Moxley. Making him already connected to the company. Although currently, this hasn’t led to anything. It would make perfect sense for him to return for an open challenge.
MJF
Even though a rematch between MJf and Cody is going to happen at some point. It seems like they’re waiting for MJF to be the person to actually beat him for it. With MJf being at the top of the leaderboard for a while and not getting any championship matches. Even though he might not beat him, surely we are going to see MJF in a championship match with either Cody or Jon Moxley soon. With him being at the top for so long. Putting the championship on the line for their next match as well, it makes a lot of sense. With MJF making Cody really work for it last time, it would make sense if MJF wanted this match this time around.
