CBS “The Bold and the Beautiful” Spoilers here with ready to go with another throwback spoiler on our way to the Daytime Grammy’s this Friday at 8 p.m. on CBS. This episode features the wonderfully talented Rome Flynn and was the episode that helped him with his only Daytime Emmy Outstanding Younger Actor Award. It’s a great accomplishment that came through not only his stellar performance, but the subject matter of the episode.
This episode confronts bigotry head on as Zende Dominguez (Rome Flynn) confronted Julius Avant (Obba Babatundé) for his bigoted views toward his transgender daughter, Maya Avant (Karla Mosely).
It’s a very powerful and much needed performance, especially during a period where we’re so quick to attack others for being different or having different opinions. It’s a reminder that it’s important to stand up for what’s right, not necessarily for what makes us feel better.
Coming to us from June 22, 2017, let’s grab some snacks and tissues and settle in for what’s going to be an amazing ride.
Zende to the rescue
Maya can’t have children for obvious reasons, so she had worked out an agreement with her sister, Nicole Avant (Reign Edwards), to adopt her baby as she served as the surrogate. The idea was the child would be born as both a Forrester and Avant; the best of both worlds.
Everything was going according to plan as Nicole had already agreed to allow the adoption, but then Julius got wind of it or had a change of heart and used his influence to convince Nicole not to give the baby up to his other daughter.
Such a kind, loving man, ain’t he?
When Zende learned about it, he went through the roof. He did manage to calm down enough to approach Nicole and plead with her to do what was right and sign the adoption papers. He argued that she had agreed before, so nothing had changed except what their father had spouted.
It was a difficult emotional moment, but eventually he convinced her to sign the papers.
Like many of daytime television’s plot ideas, this was inspired by real world events as only a few years before this transgender rights and other issues had gained the focus of the mainstream media. Like these shows so often do, they highlighted a societal issue to help bring attention to it.
It’s one of the many things that make this episode great.
