Last night, news broke that there was a New Japan Pro Wrestling show taped in California. The news was broken by Mike Johnson of PWInsider, and it was a show under the Lion’s Break banner, mainly focusing on talent from the LA Dojo. We know a few of the taped matches now, and that it was overseen by the crew from Championship Wrestling From Hollywood, two of which include Tom Lawlor.
MLW Champion Tom Lawlor Had Two Matches For New Japan Pro Wrestling
In an series of inter-promotional matches, the reigning MLW Champion ‘Filthy’ Tom Lawler worked two matches. MLW teased two days ago that Lawlor was to represent the company in inter-promotional bouts, with it being on a “upcoming card promoted by an undisclosed Japanese promotion.” Few would have guessed this would have been NJPW, as they already have partnerships with companies like ROH, CMLL and Rev Pro. This would indicate that we could see them start to work alongside MLW as well, which would be a major boost for MLW especially. Lawlor faced both Rocky Romero and Alex Coughlin, and the match with Romero should be fantastic.
Ring Of Honor Had A Match Taped
Speaking of Ring Of Honor, they would also have a presence at this event, with Tyler Bateman facing Brody King in a match taped for ROH TV. Brody King has worked with NJPW in the past through ROH, with many wanting to see him step into the ring for the 2020 G1 Climax. This match could have only been done to fill out the tapings, as there likely isn’t that much NJPW talent in California, but bodes well for fans of both men & Ring Of Honor as a whole.
There was 11 matches taped in total at this event according to reports, counting the three that we know of. It’s unclear when we will see this show or what other talent were involved. We could see Brody King get some extra attention in NJPW is serious about using him, and few would complain about seeing him work with someone like Rocky Romero.
This is all very interesting. Do you think MLW & NJPW are going to announce a proper working relationship going forward? Could Tom Lawlor show up more for NJPW in the future? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
