Just a few short months ago, it was announced that Rob Grownkowski of New England Patriots fame has signed on to join the WWE. With mountains of charisma and great physical ability, he could have become great within WWE, or at the very least win Tag Team Gold with Mojo Rawley. He did host Wrestlemania 36, and win the WWE 24/7 Championship, but he is now gone from WWE as of this morning.
WWE Cut Other New Big Name Contracts
Gronk is not the only man to have only a brief run in WWE, as Caín Velasquez got similar treatment, only wrestling one televised match for WWE. This was his WWE Championship match with old MMA rival Brock Lesnar, one of the worst matches of 2019. Beyond this, he worked a single tag match in Mexico teaming with Humberto Carillo to defeat The OC (Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows). Those matches alone make Velasquez’s WWE run all the better than Gronks. Gronk would simply show up, be annoying, get Mojo Rawley moved to Smackdown alongside him, host Wrestlemania,
This run will still likely somehow get him a spot in the WWE Hall Of Fame, as it is about as notable as Drew Carrey within WWE. Gronk & Velasquez being cut does make sense though, if WWE can’t afford to keep people like Heath Slater who grinded for years in the company around, these crossover flops shouldn’t have a job with the company either.
Could Rob Gronkowski Have Been A Star For WWE?
When he made his debut for WWE, the rumor was he would be stepping into the ring by the time Summerslam rolls around. Gronk signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers put this to the sideline, another reason he is likely out of WWE. If he had the chance to train for a debut and get in the ring on a major stage in Boston with a huge crowd, it could have been great! However, circumstances like the COVID-19 outbreak didn’t let this play out. We could see Gronk as a special entrant in the Royal Rumble in the future, but that could be all we get to see of him in the ring.
