Undoubtedly, if you have to peek at a CMLL Arena Mexico show on Friday, Kemonito had to appear on your screen. CMLL’s mascot Kemonito is a stable in Lucha Lubre and in popular Mexican culture. Numerous gifs are popular all over the internet in which, Kemonito is violently thrown to the outside mid-match.
Over the year, Kemonito received violent slams to the floor. Fans and tourists that arrived at the Arena Mexico regularly see him alongside beloved técnicos and some of the times, abused by the rudos.
Recently, Kemonito was celebrating 53 years of being alive. Super Luchas gave a brief summary of his career:
The current “stuffed blue teddy bear” “changuito” had already gained fame in the ring. When he joined Tinieblas he personified Alushe, the Mayan elf, who became the inseparable friend and companion of “Capitán Aventura”. This character would lead him to fame, but after 20 years he decided to take another path.
In 2003 Kemonito arrived at the CMLL and began to attract the attention of the fans, as he caused tenderness and sympathy for his 80 centimeters in height and his blue-and-yellow team.
Now, per El Universal in Mexico, Kemonito is thinking of retirement. In an interview with Gabriel Cruz, he said: “I don’t think that I can hold much longer, because of time, the body bumps, and my age is taking a toll. I haven’t decided yet, but, I have thought about it.” He also told Milenio:
At this point, I would rather spend more time with my family because the blows are already taking their toll, so I would like to leave this little by little. I already thought about it, even on the anniversary that happened (in September) last year I was going to retire now, but speaking with the people of the company we agreed that it would continue for a while; right now I am seeing how much my body helps me to continue, if I see that it is going backward I think that soon I would retire now and would leave the character.
Kemonito stated that maybe a son of his could take the gimmick in the future. He says that Lucha Libre is though and that he could have other involvements in the business. He claims that Ultimo Guerrero gave the hardest shots in the ring: “You get used to receiving the hard shot, and sometimes they are needed. The hardest has been the kicks of the Ultimo Guerrero.”
He told Milenio about his popularity: “I never imagined that it would reach such a point; I did think that they were going to meet me in Los Angeles (California) or Japan, but the people who like wrestling, but out of the people who are going to see wrestling never I figured it would go off like this and everywhere.” For now, CMLL is yet to return, meaning that Kemonito’s future is in the air.
