Colt Cabana is becoming one of the more interesting characters within AEW. He’s being groomed by the Dark Order, with Mr. Brodie Lee taking a special interest in him. They’ve given him two pinfall victories in a row, even despite a massive bruise slowing him down on Night Two of Fyter Fest. It’s set to become a very memorable run, but many will forget it wasn’t his first run in a major promotion. He’s mainly known as one of the best of the indies, for being around in companies like Ring Of Honor and for his brief time in New Japan Pro Wrestling, his WWE run forgotton.
Enter Scotty Goldman
In 2007, Cabana would be signed to Ohio Valley Wrestling, being set for a WWE debut come 2008. He’d make his debut against Brian Pillman, and promptly lose. Smackdown apperences would be sparse, but whenever he showed up, he’d lose in one sided matches. If you didn’t know who Colt Cabana was before he came to WWE, you wouldn’t think he would be one of the best wrestlers in the country as he got demolished by Vladimer Koslov & Great Khali. His final match would come against Umaga in 2009, airing the same day his WWE run ended. He would have been a fool to resign, and would get back to what he was best at soon after.
Cabana had the following to say about this run when he spoke to ESPN in 2017.
“When I came back after I got released by the WWE, I was 30 years old. I was like, ‘This is all I want to do, so I have to make sure I’m able to make a living.’” In a later interview, he would note “I had one of the worst WWE runs ever. The same thing has happened to others, and those wrestlers disappear from the scene.”
Colt Cabana Would Become One Of The Most Important Men In Wrestling
While it’s hard to imagine the sheer impact of Colt Cabana on wrestling, he would change the game in two ways. The first was podcasting. In 2010, he’d launch The Art Of Wrestling, which helped blaze the trail for everyone to have their own small radio shows where they give their opinion, something everyone has at this point. The second was in merchadising. Pro Wrestling Tees is second to only WWEShop when it comes to buying wrestling merch, even selling official merch for companies like AEW & New Japan Pro Wrestling.
All this combined with his consistent excellence in the ring, and being able to wear any hat needed, lead him to where he is now. He’s back with a major company, but things aren’t like they were a decade ago. He might never become AEW Champion, but he’s one of the most respected men in the company, and without how he changed the game which The Elite perfected, they might not be here. Not bad for ol’ Scotty Goldman.
