Hechicero: “You Don’t Live from Wrestling in Mexico”
Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre’s (CMLL) star, Hechicero, has an interesting interview with ESPN Deportes. In it, he talked about the current Covid-19 Virus in the Lucha Libre industry and the state of CMLL. As we have reported, CMLL in Mexico City will have to wait. Mexico is third in most cases in the American continent.
Hechicero for his part is a talented luchador. He and Daga are one of the few young wrestlers that can do technical wrestling. He loves wrestling down to the matt, using numerous holds. In CMLL, Hechicero won the NWA World Historic Light Heavyweight Championship. He has wrestled in Ring of Honor (ROH) and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG), among other independent wrestling promotions in Mexico.
On ESPN Deportes, Hechicero was asked about the state of CMLL with his wrestlers:
It is complicated because the business model of wrestling in Mexico is very different from other parts of the world, here [in Mexico] you live by the ticket, we work as a percentage of the income of a box office in the events, if there are no events, there is no work, and there is no income for us, the company has supported us, throughout the year in the company (CMLL) we are awarded prizes or incentives and what they are doing is anticipating that, normally they correspond to the second half of the year, but it is not the same as when we are active.
ESPN asked him about where does his gets extra income:
The way to solve it right now, those of us who have a culture of saving or thought to invest in something else have a mattress there, and another way of generating it, is the commercialization of our products (masks, t-shirts, key chains, cups, caps, etc. ) something we do throughout the year, but now we use the main tools like social media to sell them.
Hechicero also talked about the unique technical style that distinguish him from other highflyers in Lucha Libre:
No one here is fooled, I say this with all respect to my colleagues, from the moment you start in this environment, the first thing that is inculcated in you and if you are not inculcated you realize by yourself, it is that you do not give the world of wrestling so that you live off it, a very select group live on it.
