The top billing headline match of the Sengoku Lord featured event that saw IWGP Heavyweight and IWGP Intercontinental ‘Double Champion’ Evil defend both titles against IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Hiromu Takahashi saw NEVER Openweight Champion Shingo Takagi defend against El Desperado.
The Suzuki-Gun member had possession of Shingo’s belt, and the junior heavyweight controlled a large portion of the match by attacking Takagi’s knee. Desperado’s Lucha Libre inspired brawling style allowed him to keep Shingo off balance for the majority of the match.
Shingo was able to recover due to his impressive strength but wasn’t ever able to completely blitz through Desperado who had a great strategy coming into the match.
After utilizing his Noshigami, Made in Japan, and Pumping Bomber techniques the champion was able to hit Desperado with the Last of the Dragon at the 17 minute and 3-second mark to cap off a successful v3 defense of the Never Openweight Championship.
Shingo had a successful v2 defense on July 12th at Dominion against Sho; therefore, his victory against Desperado saw him defend the ‘Fighting Spirit Championship’ two times in 13 days with a total of 37 minutes and ten seconds of ring time.
The first headline match of Sengoku Lord saw the one-time NEVER Openweight Champion Yujiro Takahashi face former five-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada.
Yujiro was arguably in his biggest singles match since he lost the NEVER Openweight Championship on his v1 defense against Tomohiro Ishii in 17 minutes and 48 seconds to Tomohiro Ishii at King of Pro Wrestling on October 13, 2014, from the Ryogoku Sumo Hall.
Despite being the vast underdog against the most prolific IWGP Heavyweight Champion in history, Yujiro was able to withstand Okada and hold his own against the “Rainmaker.”
Yujiro even attempted to pull out his Tokyo Pimps technique that he hasn’t utilized in quite some time to capture victory against Okada. However, Okada was able to survive outside interference from Gedo, the Miami Shine technique from Yujiro, to eventually when by submission at the 13 minute and 43-second mark with the Cobra Clutch.
The victory for Okada continues his path back towards the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, however, he may have to win the G1 Climax 30 to receive his challenge for the prestigious title.
