Probably if you are a fan of wrestling in Puerto Rico, you will have already seen the famous video of the new champion of the Americas, Justin Dynamite doing a 450 in “springboard” out on a table where the body of Mark Davidson was. This moment was immense, one of the best of the night, one that will identify Justin and Davidson as the armors of the best fight of 2019. The Insurrection match between Dynamite and Davidson identified a development that the League has worked for a long time. , especially in the last one. Those of us who were present in Caguas saw two young men break all the parameters that would have been established on the island and be able to offer a greater spectacle than what was expected of them.
Before the fight started, it was one of the same WWL wrestlers who said to me in a hurry (when Davidson came out in a futuristic armor): “You are ready for this fight, because this is going to be the best of the night.” In this, I would have to refute that great friend and tell him that it was not the best fight of the night, but the best of the year. To describe how picturesque it was to witness the struggle, I will allude that it was one of the rare occasions that AB Morales (the editor in chief of Impacto Estelar, the largest Spanish Magazine on Puerto Rican wrestling) and I were able to observe a match together live.
The fight had the opportunity to break all the “taboos” that restrict wrestling in Puerto Rico. For any veteran, a “Tables, Ladders, and Chairs” match cannot tell a story on the island. Plus, it will tell you that there must be blood and a deep story behind it in order to connect with the fan. However, Justin vs. Mark had that and much more. Both knew each other from before, in the previous two meetings, they had excellent fights. On Saturday they followed that synchronized parallelism that so many identified and created magic using chairs, tables, and ladders.
Justin and Mark at no time, in the beginning, made the observation of the championship at 20 feet high. They understood that if there was resentment, it would have to be destroyed first (destroying the notion that the new generation does not know how to tell a story). From then on, Justin and Mark explored the limitations of their body, with excellent execution.
There was not a single failure and best of all, they protected themselves. The most vivid example of this was when Davidson applied a packet piledriver to a table and Justin barely tested the ground with his neck. Even when there were powerbombs on the stairs, whistles, and even exploders on the corner, Justin and Davidson ran under safety. Not that we weren’t concerned. On the contrary, when Justin made his infamous 450 on the table, we thought that this one had destroyed all his teeth. But in general, what was experienced there was a demonstration of raising the level to places not previously touched.
When the match culminated in a moment of despair and anguish because it seemed that Mark would manage to avoid Justin, AB, and I looked at each other and were still unable to process the fight. Immediately the words were: “match of the year”. It is not just the action, but the sequence, the limits changed, the fever that incarnated in the fanatic. One does not tend to see something so beautiful. I’ve been in the other two best WWL matches this year. The first being LAX vs. Los PrimosMelendez vs. Los Fugitivos (Niche & Lynx) and the other being Mike Mendoza vs. Star Roger at Pena Capital. And I can say, like AB Morales, Juan C. González, and other voracious observers, that this match is in position one to be the match of the year.
There are purists that will indicate that what Justin vs. Davidson should not be considered as great as Mendoza vs. Roger or the same triple threat couples match, but I would challenge these retracts and show the reactions of those matches when they ended against this match when it ended. Planets lined up for Davidson vs. Dynamite on Saturday and one can only highlight the pride that came with witnessing this.
