There are few men as opinionated in professional wrestling as Jim Cornette is. No maytter what it is, he has something to say on it, and rarely do people outside of his fanbase actually agree with him. This is a rare exception, as he commented on and critizied the spot that injured NXT wrestler Dexter Lumis.
Dexter Lumis Suffered An Ankle Injury
During a Triple Threat match with Finn Balor & Timothy Thatcher, a match that Lumis would actually win, he’d suffer an injury. This took him out of what would have been his first match at an NXT Takeover event, and could have been avoided.
In the match, Lumis would dive over the top rope with a flip, and land on his feet as Thatcher & Balor looked on in amazement. They missed the shot of him landing apparently, making it look like they had to edit the scene. However, he stuck the landing, so hard that he hurt his ankle in the process.
This is a spot that was previously done by Ricochet during his feud with Velveteen Dream. However there is a hefty size difference betweeen Lumis & Ricochet, and the intentions made sense with Ricochet. When Ricochet did it, he was calling out Dream who just said ‘anything you can do, I can do better’, shutting him up with actions. With Lumis? It was a spot that didn’t need to happen.
Jim Cornette Chimes In
A long time defender of old school southern wrestling, Cornette isn’t too big a fan of the modern spot based style. He explains the reasons why he didn’t like this spot however.
“Get over smarter, not harder. The risk reward ratio of something like that for that spot in an empty arena television match? If he had nailed it and the camera had not cut through the whole thing and you saw he obviously did it? You would have said ‘wow, holy sh*t that was a heck of a flip. But the whole idea was not for him to wipe out his opponents. Just a flip and stand in the middle of them to freak them out. And for that? He dove headfirst toward a concrete floor, padded, but he risked blowing out his knees, his ankles, his f*cking crotch whatever you could blow out. Pick your spots!”
For once, it’s hard to deny that Cornette has a good point. This spot was clearly flawed, and while it showed how good of an athlete Lumis is, it didn’t need to happen. There are safer ways to showcase athletic prowess without risk.
