The XFL is something that simply refuses to fully die, the Impact Wrestling of Football Leagues at this point. After a much hyped relaunch headed by WWE owner Vince McMahon failed miserably thanks to COVID-19 shutting down their first season, another man has picked up the mantle of the owner of the XFL. This former WWE Champion and Hollywood Star, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.
The Rock Buys The XFL For 15 Million Dollars
The news was first broken by Sportico, which details that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has purchased the previously bankrupt football league. This seems strange at first glance, but he has experience on the Gridiron, having played college football at the University of Miami. It’s likely that love has never died, and why own an NFL team when you can own an entire league?
His partner in this deal is RedBird Capital, with this deal being made official just hours before an auction for the league was going to begin.
This is not official yet, as court approvals will have to take place, and we’ll have more official word on this as of Friday, August 21st.
Keeping Wrestling In The XFL
The spring football league was founded and originally funded by WWE owner Vince McMahon, and The Rock would actually show up as a special guest in the initial season of the league back in the early 2000’s. Many believe that this is The Rock simply holding onto the league for Vince McMahon, who will buy it back after the pandemic.
The Rock being involved in anything will dramatically increase public interest in something however, being one of the most famous men on the planet. This could be just what the league needed, but we will have to wait and see if the deal goes through, and if they can actually get a season off the ground.
Filling the gap the off season for the NFL leaves is not a bad idea inheritly, but the XFL brand has been cursed to fail twice now. While there is no proof it’ll happen a third time, you can’t help but be skeptical about it all.
Do you think the third time’s a charm for the XFL? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
