Last night at NXT Takeover XXX, Keith Lee’s run as NXT Champion was ended at only 45 days, one of the shorter reigns in the belts history. He was beaten by Karrion Kross after a 21 minute heavyweight clash, and fans aren’t happy about this.
Kross has a clear strong push, and the result of this match simply felt obvious. Combine that with Lee not getting the epic reign people wanted, and they didn’t send fans home happy. However, Keith Lee did not need a long reign as NXT Champion. His reign was just a cherry on top of an already great run in NXT.
Keith Lee Already Feuded With Everyone As North American Champion
When Keith Lee won the NXT Championship, he was already well into his run as NXT North American Champion, having perhaps the best run that belt ever had. During that reign he faced just about everyone in his 182 days as champion. Cameron Grimes, Johnny Gargano, Finn Balor, Damien Priest, Roderick Strong, Adam Cole and Dominic Dijakovic were all in matches during this reign.
That list is essentially all main event ready names in NXT right now, and Keith Lee already beat them all in fantastic matches. Outside of a one on one match with Finn Balor, a match with Timothy Thatcher, or a match with the returning Tomassaso Ciampa, there wasn’t much for Lee to do. He’s done it all in NXT already.
RAW or Smackdown Bound
One reason Keith Lee likely didn’t get a particularly long run as NXT Champion is that he’s onto bigger things. Lee is practically made for main roster success, as seen by his clashes with Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar, where he looked to be their equals. He is going to be a huge star once he goes to RAW or Smackdown, and his aura has outgrown NXT already.
Lee isn’t like Gargano or Ciampa who are fine staying in NXT, he is someone who could easily be a multiple time WWE Champion. That is his destiny. The same could be said about Karrion Kross, who seems like he’s on the fast track to the main roster as well, his NXT run simply to establish him as a dangerous threat in the WWE landscape.
Being upset about Keith Lee only getting a short run on top of NXT is fine, but his future is still bright, and this might be for the best. Do you think Keith Lee should have won last night’s match? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
