CHAOS member Will Ospreay and Bullet Club member Yujiro Takahashi wrestled the first match of G1 Climax 30. Ospreay who has been on the receiving end of critique for a convoluted personal feud was welcomed back to New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) with open arms.
Yujiro has had a resurgence since NJPW returned to action after the COVID-19 (Coronavirus 2019) after a long program with former five-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada. He’s making his first G1 Climax entry since G1 Climax 25 (2015).
G1 Climax 30: Ospreay v Yujiro
Despite Revolution Pro Wrestling Undisputed British Heavyweight Champion Will Ospreay being the favorite, Yujiro did not back down from the challenge put in front of him.
Ospreay was keen to begin the match at a fast pace, but Yujiro was able to match him with his cunning and amateur wrestling background. While the match retained a quick pace, Yujiro did not look out of his depth when attempting to keep up with Ospreay.
However, after absorbing and Olympic Slam and cleverly countering the Tokyo Pimps with his athleticism, Ospreay was able to gain the fall over Yujiro at the 7 minute and 34-second mark with the Storm Breaker technique.
Both wrestlers have an uphill battle in Block A, but neither should be disappointed with their performance. Ospreay will have a number of difficult matches against the likes of NEVER Openweight Champion Minoru Suzuki, Jay White, Kota Ibushi, and fellow CHAOS members, Tomohiro Ishii/Kazuchika Okada.
Yujiro will likely play the spoiler, who looks to gain enough victories to not lose the momentum he’s gained over the past several months. If he is able to capture a high profile win or two, he will remain an interesting figure as NJPW enters 2021.
G1 Climax 30 Night Two on September 20th will see the first night of Block B.
