This weekend will bring us NXT Takeover 31, meaning that we have just one show to finish the build to this event. NXT this week doesn’t have very much announced, but let’s break it down anyways!
Finn Balor Meets Kyle O’Reilly Face To Face
At NXT Takeover 31, the main event is something fans didn’t expect. Undisputed Era’s resident tag team expert Kyle O’Reilly won the Gauntlet Eliminator match last week, overcoming KUSHIDA, Cameron Grimes, Timothy Thatcher & Bronson Reed. O’Reilly isn’t a well established singles wrestler in NXT, but he’s a former Ring Of Honor Champion, and can go the distance.
Ahead of this match, he will meet with Balor face to face in the ring this week, which should help this rushed build come together enough. Balor is likely to dress down O’Reilly and remind him he’s over his head going into this match, and O’Reilly will have to show he can hang on the microphone before he does so in the ring. Thankfully Shawn Micheals will be there to keep some semblance of order!
Champions Unite To Face Challengers
Two other title matches set for NXT Takeover 31 are Damien Priest defending the NXT North American Championship against Johnny Gargano, and Io Shirai defending the NXT Women’s Championship against Candice LeRae. With Gargano & LeRae both challenging, it makes sense we’d get a mixed tag team match pitting them against the champions.
Priest and Shirai will get a chance to test their opponents, but have no experience teaming together, while Gargano & LeRae are happily married. This gives them a slight advantage if nothing else, and a win here will give them a mental edge going into Sunday.
Other Matches To Finish Building
The other two matches on the card of NXT Takeover 31 will also get some spotlight tonight. Santos Escobar will defend his NXT Cruiserweight Championship against Isiah ‘Swerve’ Scott, something which should have been on the card of NXT Takeover 30, but better late than never. They’ve been clashing all Summer, and it’s time to see who is better once and all. We can expect to see one or both of them in action tonight, or even a simple video package to catch everyone up to speed.
Finally, KUSHIDA will take on Velveteen Dream in a grudge match, after they’ve been attacking each other whenever possible, with Dream helping to remove KUSHIDA from the Gauntlet Eliminator match. Fans aren’t keen on this match due to Dreams recent allegations, but it should be a functionally fine match, and KUSHIDA is projected to win.
We can also expect to see or hear from names like Bronson Reed, Cameron Grimes, NXT Tag Team Champions Breezango, and Rhea Ripley. Who do you hope to see on NXT tonight? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
