Boxing News: Luke Campbell And Ryan Garcia Fight Officially Announced For The 5th December

There will be huge lightweight title ramifications in December, as it has been revealed that Luke Campbell and Ryan Garcia will battle for the interim WBC lightweight title. It will be one of the most anticipated fights of the year, as it will pit two of the biggest challengers together with the promise of a main title challenge later down the road.

The winner of the fight will likely look to fight against Vasily Lomachenko, who is rightly considered as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world. The Ukrainian will be defending his titles next weekend in Las Vegas against Teofimo Lopez. But, both Garcia and Campbell will be keen observers for that fight.

Boxing News: One Of America’s Most Exciting Prospects

Ryan Garcia is already seen by many as one of the most exciting American prospects in years, and has begun his professional career with an outstanding record. The 22-year-old has won all 20 professional fights to this point, with 17 of those wins coming by way of knockout. The Ring magazine already classes him as the sixth best in the lightweight division.

There is no doubt that this will be a step up in quality for the American as Campbell has been in two world title fights during his career. However, those who watch the sport will be fully aware that Garcia is ready for a better opponent. He has won his last four via KO/TKO, with his last two fights being won in the opening round. Garcia’s last win came against Francisco Fonseca in California back in February.

Boxing News: Campbell Presents Big Challenge

Garcia may go into the fight as the heavy favourite, but Campbell will present the biggest challenge of his career to date. Campbell has enjoyed success throughout his career, and is an Olympic gold medallist. He won his Olympic gold medal for Great Britain at the London Olympics in 2012, and has transferred that amateur potential into professional pedigree.

Campbell has won 20 of his professional bouts, but has lost on three occasions. Two of those defeats have come in world title bouts, with the most recent of those coming against Lomachenko in August last year. There was no shame in Campbell’s performance that evening, as he stood toe-to-toe with one of the best boxers in the world throughout the 12 rounds. A victory against Garcia could put Campbell back to the front of the line to challenge the Ukrainian again next year.
