G1 Climax 30 Night 15 saw current Revolution Pro Wrestling (RevPro) Undisputed British Heavyweight Champion Will Ospreay face former NEVER Openweight Champion Jeff Cobb in the opening tournament match of the event.
Ospreay came into the match after defeating former two-time NEVER Openweight Champion and Suzuki-Gun member Taichi during G1 Climax 30 Night 13. Cobb was also able to grab victory from former five-time NEVER Openweight Champion and CHAOS member Tomohiro Ishii.
This was the first singles match between the two since Cobb defeated Ospreay at the G1 Supercard to end Ospreay’s reign from the NEVER Openweight Championship.
The match itself was highly competitive with Ospreay having difficulty dealing with the power and increased endurance of Cobb. However, Ospreay would not back down from his strategy despite Cobb being able to answer a number of his questions.
Cobb was able to deliver several impactful suplexes, Ospreay fought through the pain and was able to deliver his Oscutter technique, yet was unable to gain the victory with it.
However, Ospreay was never able to hit the Stormbreaker, allowing Cobb to keep his balance and respond once again.
Cobb would gain the fall at the 12 minutes and 21 seconds mark with the Tour of the Islands technique and move to 8 points. He finishes up his G1 Climax 30 campaign against Yujiro on October 16th.
With the loss, Ospreay stays at 10 points and now needs to defeat fellow CHAOS member and former five-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada along with having a list of results to win A Block.
While advancing to the G1 Climax 30 Finals will take a perfect storm for Ospreay, a victory over Okada would spoil the campaign for his unit mate and set Ospreay up to possibly challenge for an IWGP singles title in the heavyweight division.
