The WWE are prone to do strange things, and one of the strangest decisions that they make more often than not is changing the name of a superstar that is active on the roster. That happened again this week, as it was revealed that Matt Riddle will now be known as Riddle.
It seems pretty clear that Vince McMahon isn’t a fan of first names at the minute, as that has constantly been something that has been dropped out of superstars names. But, which other superstars have had a name change this year?
WWE News: Murphy
The first change of name this year came back in February, as the ‘Buddy’ from Buddy Murphy was dropped as the superstar teamed up with Seth Rollins to reign on the Monday night brand. This is one of the names that generally makes sense, as Murphy is a much better name.
However, it is unknown whether the original name could return at some point in the future, as Murphy is now looking like he will become a babyface again as he feuds with Rollins on SmackDown. However, only time will tell whether we will be welcoming back Buddy Murphy.
WWE News: Santos Escobar
Another name change that has worked out pretty well is Santos Escobar. His name changed at the beginning on June on an episode of NXT as he was revealed as the leader of a new faction.
His previous name was El Hijo del Fantasma, which means that fans will likely remember his new name more easily. He is clearly one of the talents that the WWE are invested in, as he is excelling in a more regular role towards the top of the card.
WWE News: Retribution
It’s easy to lump all the members of Retribution into one, as all members have been given new names. All of the names are more on the ridiculous side, with Dominik Dijakovic now being known as T-Bar. Meanwhile, Dio Maddin is now Mace, while Slapjack is the superstar previously known as Shane Throne.
Mia Yim has also had her name changed after becoming a part of the faction, as she is now known as Reckoning. The final member of the group is Retaliation, who was previously called Mercedes Martinez. However, it’s fair to say that fans haven’t exactly been on board with the new names.
