For a while now, WWE Champion Drew McIntyre and World Champion boxer Tyson Fury have been taking shots at each other over social media. This was clearly to build a to match, but one never came. However, now the plans are starting to come out, and WWE had a UK supershow planned with them in the main event.
WWE & AEW Racing To Have Major Wrestling PPV in The UK
Not counting NXT UK Takeover events and big episodes of RAW & Smackdown, it has been quite some time since the United Kingdom has gotten a big wrestling PPV. Insurrextion back in 2003 was the last major PPV event, but wrestling fans over there have been clamouring for a return.
Both WWE & AEW know this, and it’s been a bit for a race to get that first major show back. We learned a few months back that AEW had intentions of having a major show over there before COVID-19 hit, and now we know WWE had a similar plan.
Drew McIntyre vs. Tyson Fury Was Going To Main Event
WWE has done stadium supershows in Australia & Saudi Arabia in recent years, and their eyes were on the UK next. To cap off this huge show we would have seen McIntyre defend the WWE Championship against Tyson Fury. Fury wrestled a match against Braun Strowman in Saudi Arabia, with the best part being his over the top entrance. Despite this, it got WWE a lot of attention and he wanted another chance to step into their ring.
This is why McIntyre & Fury have been feuding online throughout 2020, as while this match was cancelled for now, it’s still something WWE wants to do. It’s a big match, and wouldn’t need the WWE Championship to make it important at this point. Expect to see them continue to launch shots at each other into 2021, as WWE tries to find a time and place that works for this match. We likely would have seen some NXT UK stars get involved on this show as well, a match like British Strong Style (Pete Dunne, Tyler Bate & Trent Seven) vs. The New Day being a potential crowd pleaser WWE might have pulled out.
