One of the finest boxers on the planet could be about to step back into the ring for the first time in over 12 months next month if the latest reports are to be believed. It has been revealed by promoter Eddie Hearn that reports published by ESPN were slightly short of the mark, as the American broadcaster revealed that the deal for a huge middleweight bout was agreed.
However, Hearn did indicate that talks are progressing well, and a huge fight between Callum Smith and Canelo Alvarez could be finalised very soon. It would be an unexpected treat for fight fans, as not many would have predicted seeing such high-calibre fighters going head to head on such short notice.
Boxing News: Alvarez A Free Agent
The reason that we haven’t seen Alvarez in the ring for the past 12 months is largely down to the breakdown in the relationship between the boxer, his promoter and DAZN. However, last week it was revealed that the Mexican legend had become a free agent after his release from mega-money contracts. The deal was worth a reported £278 million, and was an eleven fight deal.
However, Alvarez wasn’t happy with the deal as he questioned the quality of opposition that he was coming up against. Since signing the deal, Alvarez has beaten Rocky Fielding, Daniel Jacobs and Sergey Kovalev. He won the fights against Fielding and Kovalev by KO, while the Jacobs fight he won by unanimous decision. Those victories have seen him extend his professional record to 53-1-2, with his only defeat coming against Floyd Mayweather in 2013.
Boxing News: Could Smith Present A Real Test?
Callum Smith has enjoyed an excellent professional career, as he has won all 27 fights that he has been involved in. However, it’s hard to argue against the point that he has never come up against somebody of the standing at Alvarez. Regardless, Smith is regarded as the best super-middleweight by the Transitional Boxing Rankings, and has successfully defended his WBA (Super) title on two occasions in the past 18 months.
Smith won the title in an all-British affair against George Groves, with a brutal seventh round knockout. He regained the title in the next fight against Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam with another stoppage victory. His last fight came on the 23rd November last year, as he beat John Ryder by unanimous decision in Liverpool.
