There isn’t much doubt surrounding the discussion of the best female boxer of all-time, and she will be back in the ring this weekend. Katie Taylor will be looking for a 17th consecutive win this weekend against Miriam Gutierrez, and it will be yet another feat that she has accomplished if she is able to do that.
Taylor will be the headline name on the huge night of boxing, with Terence Crawford and Kell Brook also involved in a huge fight in the United States on the same night. But, nowadays, Taylor is the star that many believed that she would become, and there aren’t many bigger draws in the industry that the Irish star.
Boxing News: Taylor’s Esteemed Career
There never seemed to be doubt surrounding Taylor’s ability in the ring, and that stemmed back from the esteemed success that she achieved as an amateur. Before turning professional, she won the gold medal at the World Championships five consecutive times, and won six European Championships. But, her legacy goes far beyond what she has managed to achieve in her amateur career.
Taylor has revolutionised the women’s sport, and has inspired millions not just in Ireland, but around the world. Many consider the boxer to be the most gifted Irish athlete of this generation, and her standing in home country was evident as she was selected at the flag bearer for the county at the London Olympics. Her star was bright in Ireland before that Olympics, but the world was on notice after stunning displays throughout the summer to win the gold medal.
Boxing News: Turning Professional
Unlike many Olympic gold medallists, Taylor refused the urge to turn professional immediately after the 2012 games, and didn’t sign with Matchroom until 2016. She made her long awaited debut against Karina Kopinska in November of the same year, and beat her Polish opponent by TKO in the third round.
Taylor would win her first title under a year later as she beat Nina Meinke to claim the inter-continental title. She would add the WBA lightweight title to her collection before the end of 2017, before adding the IBF lightweight title to her collection in April 2018 in her second fight in the United States. Taylor’s reputation grew to unprecedented heights in 2019, as she beat Delfine Persoon to win the WBC title.
She successfully defended the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO titles earlier this year against Persoon, and she remains only one of eight professional boxers to hold all four major boxing championships. Taylor’s reputation as the best pound-for-pound female in the world will be on the line this weekend, but it’s always hard to bet against this irrepressible legend of the sport.
