Disappointing news broke this week, as it was revealed that Luke Campbell’s huge fight in the United States against Ryan Garcia was cancelled. The cancellation comes after it was reported that Campbell has tested positive for COVID-19.
It had promised to be a huge night of boxing, as the two-time title challenger was trying to get back on the right path against the classy Garcia on the 5th December. However, it has already been revealed that the date will be delayed, which means that the 2012 gold medallist will not miss out on his huge fight in the United States.
Boxing News: Campbell Looking To Get Back On Track
This was scheduled to be the British fighters first fight back after suffering the third defeat of his career last year against Vasyl Lomachenko. There was no shame for the British fighter in losing that fight, as he pushed the Ukrainian superstar to his limit over the 12 rounds at the O2 Arena in London. However, this fight against Garcia will be make or break for Campbell, as he had already lost twice prior to that defeat.
The first of those was a shock defeat in the United Kingdom against Yvan Mendy, before he was agonisingly beaten by split decision in his first world title bout against Colombian boxer Jorge Linares. Following that defeat, he avenged the loss that he suffered at the hands of Mendy, and beat Troy James and Adrian Yung. However, he can’t afford another defeat on his record against Garcia.
Boxing News: Garcia Will Be The Favourite
There is no doubt that Garcia will come into this fight as the huge favourite in the betting, as he has won all 20 professional fights that he has been involved in to date. He has won a remarkable 17 of these by knockout, with only three victories coming by decision. Another victory against Garcia in the rescheduled bout will likely lead to a world title opportunity against either Teofimo Lopez or Lomachenko, depending on which fighter wins their re-match, which is reportedly going to happen next year.
Garcia has all the ability to be the next star in the lightweight division, as he has won his last three fights by knockout inside in the opening two rounds. His last two fights have both been won in the first round, with Garcia beating Francisco Fonseca in the opening round in his last fight back in February to retain his WBC Silver lightweight belt.
