The November 19, 2020 World Tag League 2020 (WTL 2020) event took place in front of 662 fans (Reduced due to COVID-19). The Korkauen Hall audience in Tokyo, Japan was as lively as New Japan Pro Wrestling’s (NJPW) COVID-19 guidelines allowed them to be.
The opening series match of the event saw Jeff Cobb and Great-O-Khan (1-1) of the Empire take on Bad Luck Fale and “Crown Jewel” Chase Owens (0-2) of the Bullet Club. Both teams were coming off a loss during their previous tournament match. Due to their slow start, Fale/Owens needed a victory to keep a realistic chance of qualifying for the WTL 2020 Finals alive, while Cobb/O-Khan could set themselves up near the top of the table with a win.
The match began as a fight, with both attempting to establish a physical dominance. When the referee was able to control the festivities, Chase Owens was isolated for the vast majority of the contest against two far bigger opponents.
The Bullet Club tandem, unfortunately, was unable to ever find their form during the match leading to the Empire being able to dictate the terms of the match throughout. Cobb/O-Khan have quickly gelled as a tag team in a short period.
Cobb would gain the fall over Owens at the 6 minutes and 47 seconds mark with his Tour of the Islands technique. With the win Empire moves to 4 points, while the Bullet Club teams remain on 0.
Fale/Owens would go on to face the Los Ingobernables de Japon (LIJ) team of Sanada and “The Dragon” Shingo Takagi on November 22nd. Cobb/O-Khan went on to face former IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Champions and WTL 2019 winners FinJuice (Juice Robinson/David Finlay) on the same night.
The Empire put themselves in a great position to make a top-two finish and advance to the WTL 2020 Finals.
