This match is over a year and a half in the making, and is possibly the biggest match in All Elite Wrestling history. It’s Kenny Omega vs. Jon Moxley, and it’s for the AEW World Championship. Since the start of AEW, all the way back to Double or Nothing 2019, they’ve wanted to see who is the better wrestler. Tonight, we finally get the answer to that question, and it could be the best match of the year, provided it meets the hype.
Before the match, Moxley would have a promo aired where he reflected on how far this has come. Two years ago, he was burnt out and AEW was a dream. Now, we’re here, and the two best wrestlers in the world are here to do this. Everything is set, it’s time for them to hit the ring and have the crowd go bananas.
Don Callis was also on hand to help call this match, to support Kenny Omega. One man comes in with a 11 singles match win streak, holds the record for most wins in AEW at 33, and that’s Kenny Omega. The other has never lost a singles match in his AEW run, and that’s the AEW Champion Jon Moxley. It’s got a 60 minute time limit, and it could go that deep.
A Slow Start
The belt would be raised high, the bell would ring, and this one started. They’d go face to face in the middle of the ring, before locking up. Moxley went right for a sleeper hold, and letting Omega know when he reached the rope that he was close to a choke out. Omega responded by taking Moxley down, and applying a rear chinlock.
They’ve opted for a slow start, Moxley running through Omega with a shoulder block and going back to the trust side headlock. Omega got up, and put Moxley in the corner and went for some deadly strikes. Moxley absorbed a few chops, and threw some forearms before throwing Omega into the corner and getting the clothesline.
Moxley would be hit in return with a running frankensteiner, before being sent to the outside. Omega heard the Terminator clap and went for the dive, but Moxley got in and caught him with a swinging side slam. On the apron now, Omega was turned inside out with a lariat, almost landing on his neck on the way down.
Outside Brawling Is Jon Moxley’s Style
Moxley would hit a suplex on the outside, and this was his game, as they brawled at the ringside area. The referee didn’t want this match to end this way, and wouldn’t count. Omega tried to throw some strikes back at Moxley, but was thrown into the seats just a bit away from fans.
Moxley would send him headfirst into a chair, but Omega came back with chops. He’d ended up tripped up and sent into the ring post, and Moxley finally got back in the ring for a second before going back out for Omega. Moxley lost his head a bit, and Omega took advantage as he came through the ropes. A dragon screw leg whip through the ropes was followed by a knee breaker onto the barricade.
Now with a target, Omega would hit a missile dropkick to the knee, before nailing the Kotaro Crusher. Moxley was down in the corner, and his knee was stomped before it was bent up in the ropes. It’d be dropkicked, the explosive nature of Omega starting to shine. Moxley would play possum and take out Omega with a lariat when he rushed in again.
Kenny Omega Loses The Advantage
Moxley shook some feeling into the leg, before Omega captured the hurt leg and applied a kneebar. He couldn’t get the full extension, so pulled Moxley up and worked to break him down even more. Omega went for the rolling Fireman’s Carry, but Moxley shoved him off and nailed the release german suplex.
A second one would follow, and he’d get the exploder suplex next despite Omega’s fighting. A release suplex got a near fall, and the damage was starting to pile up on both men. They’d be on their knees and trading blows in the middle of the ring, Moxley winning out and applied the STF.
He’d move into a crossface, but Omega countered into a pinfall, with Moxley countering right back. Some big chops would come from Moxley, but a knee to the face sent him back, letting him run in with the next one. Another rush in saw Omega send Moxley to the outside, and this time he nailed the big dive over the top rope.
Sending Moxley back in the ring, Omega would springboard off the top rope and take a Paradigm Shift. However, Moxley didn’t go for the pinfall, and threw two steel chairs into the ring. He’d set up them, and take a seat, before asking Omega to hit him.
Take A Seat, Stay A While
Some big open handed strikes from both men would follow, a show of pure toughness in the making. They moved to jabs, and they’d grit and bare it, until Omega nailed the V-Trigger. Finally picking the pace up, he’d hit the snap dragon suplex, but Moxley was red to dodge the V-Trigger and got a release German Suplex.
Omega got the knee anyways, but took the King Kong Lariat. A second Paradigm Shift should have ended it, but Omega kicked out. He sensed another coming, so slipped outside and caught a flying Moxley with a V-Trigger. Omega went up high and hit the Tiger Mask style missile dropkick, sending Moxley into the corner for a V-Trigger, then the Tiger Driver ‘98. This only got a two count too.
Moxley took a few knees to the chest, and a V-Trigger let Omega try for One Winged Angel. He’d fail to get the kill shot, and instead catch Moxley with the dropkick. The pose of The Rainmaker would be used, as he hit the Ripcord V-Trigger and tried for One Winged Angel again, instead getting Croyt’s Wrath for a two count.
So Much For A Gentlmans Agreement
Pulling deep into his history, Omega went high for the Phoenix Splash, but Moxley cut him off and Omega went to the outside. A Paradigm Shift into a ringside heater would put the match in jeopardy, doctors checking him out and Don Callis checking the situation out as well. Moxley pulled Omega back into the ring, and rained punches down on the head of Omega.
Callis would grab a microphone and get his hands on Moxley, getting punched in the face. Omega grabbed the microphone, and got Moxley in-between the eyes with it, busting him open! The knee was exposed and Omega nailed a V-Trigger, but Moxley was still standing. A second dropped him, then a third, and a forth.
The bloody champion was put on the shoulders, and One Winged Angel hit. We have a new AEW World Champion, ending the reign of Jon Moxley at 277 days. Callis & Omega got the hell out of dodge, the locker room not pleased at how Omega won this, and say next Tuesday on Impact Wrestling, all will be clear.
